A Series of Unfortunate Events

First of all, I would like to apologize to all my fellow bloggers and regular visitors, please forgive me for my sudden disappearance… I promise to make up for the lost time…lols. I’m finally back in front of a computer, not my computer but on an internet café. My computer is still at home, waiting to be fixed. And by the way, when I say “at home”, I am now referring to a new apartment as I was just evicted from my old apartment… lols.

This last week was a tough one for me. It seems that my luck has run out and a string of unfortunate events has just unfolded right through my very eyes. Nothing serious, really, I’m just being melodramatic.

It was last week when I was told by my landlady that the apartment that I was renting was already sold, she told me the news after showering me with praises as being the best-ever tenant on that apartment. She couldn't help but to tell me that I am so kind, well-mannered, responsible, disciplined and good-looking … sorry, can’t help to add that last bit hehehe. She said that her son got himself in a financial trouble that is none of my business. Well to cut the story short, I had to vacate the premises…. But on a short notice as the new occupants will be arriving in a week’s time. That’s a serious injustice! But being a well-mannered, kind and responsible person (hehehe), I relented and went out looking for a new house.

Luckily (well, that’s what I thought at that time) another apartment has been available just in front of my apartment. The owner said that since the apartment was unoccupied for a couple of months, he will have to repair some things in the house first. I thought, no worries, as long it will be ready within a week. So I had myself a deal.

So days passed by and the repair work was still ongoing in the new apartment, I spoke to my landlady and she said not to worry as the new tenant is still in Mindoro and she will just ask for an extension.

It was Thursday morning when I received a call in the office from my landlady informing me that the new tenants has just arrived and the truck carrying their things was on the side of the road. Irritated, I said I’m already at the office and they just have to wait until I get home. It’s not my fault anyway. But while I’m at the office I can’t seem to concentrate on the job. What if they break into my apartment? My money, computer and other personal belongings are scattered all over the place. I ended up, going home early and packed my things.

As if it’s not enough, when I went to the new apartment to inform the owner that I will be moving in,I was told that the repair is still ongoing and it may take another day or two to complete the repair. I began to see an image of myself sleeping in the streets…

When I went back to my apartment to continue packing, I was informed by my landlady that she found a new apartment for me a couple of blocks away. We went to check it out and found out that it is absolutely better than my old apartment. Which meant that I also need to shell out more cash to get it? Well, I run out of choices either so I moved to the new apartment.

Moving to a different apartment also meant that I will be moving my telephone and broadband line as well. I just called Bayantel and was told that I need to pay P1, 288.00 to transfer the line and I got myself a list of requirements to submit for them to transfer the line. My subscription is locked-in for a year so that also means that I will be paying the telephone and DSL even for the period that I’m not using it. No problem with that, I just want my telephone and internet back so I can resume with my normal life…

Unfortunately, when I tried to turn on my computer the other day, it won’t boot up. It appears that one of the system files is corrupted. Two years worth of pictures, videos and other media are stored on my hard disk without backup. I started to panic but being a technical support representative by profession, I have to exhaust my resources. I’ve tried repairing the operating system, but to no avail. I ended up, installing another operating system on the same hard disk just to recover my files. Thank God, it worked.

I just hope that everything will be back to normal in the coming days. I now have a new home with less money and a computer without an internet connection.

Indeed, there are lessons to be learned on every seemingly unfortunate event happening to us… The lessons I’ve learned? I'm still trying to process it….

An open letter from a parent

This was sent to me by one of my officemates a few months back... The letter is funny and grossly exaggerated but there's a subtle touch to the heart of parents who worked hard to give good education and a better future for their children. I saw a version of this letter in Yahoo so i thought of posting this one:

Dear Anak,

Working on a Sunday...

It’s a Sunday, and I’m at work. This is a price to pay for working in a call center. Not really a typical call center job where you work the third shift or for some the graveyard shift, my shift starts at 6:30 am and ends at 3:30. That is without the DST (Daylight Saving Time) in effect in Australia. Yeah, we support the Australia, New Zealand and the East Asia Region.

It could have been better if the weather is cooperative, but not this time. A typhoon is currently hovering in the metropolis. Its name is Frank, a friendly name for a vicious storm… As I write, a passenger ship carrying at least 700 people capsized off the waters of Romblon. The upshot, 4 dead and 700 more missing. According to the news, this typhoon already killed at least 17 people in the Southern Philippines, at least 59 people in Iloilo and the death toll could rise further after flash flooding. Bless their souls…

This morning, I wake up at 5:00 am and board a taxi to work. I was drenched with rainwater from my short walk from my house to the highway which is just a couple of blocks away, I was even armed with an umbrella and a jacket. On my way to work, I saw flooded streets and tree branches scattered on the highway. I knew that it will not be long and most of Metro Manila will be submerged in floodwater and that there will be power outages, just judging from the intensity of this typhoon. And I was right…

The good thing is, it’s Sunday… a not so busy day. I’m suddenly reminded that as a Catholic or a Christian, I should be resting on this day and attending mass… Sadly, I need to go to work as this job has no respect for religion or culture. Not that I’m complaining, but who would rather work on a Sunday, with a killer storm on the loose than to just rest and pray at home? I for one, would gladly stay at home and pray… But obviously, some of us don’t have much choice… With the growing numbers of unemployed in this country, most of us would just be glad not to be part of the statistics. Even if it means turning your back on your tradition… Some will even break the law just to earn a living… that at least never crossed my mind.

I can only hope that with God’s omnipotence, He will understand our condition and extend his forgiveness to us who work on Sundays…

Gloria signs tax exemption law for minimum wage earners

I’ve heard it in the evening news yesterday without much impact but everybody is talking about it in the office, President Arroyo signed into law Republic Act 9504 or the Tax Exemption law for minimum wage earners. Indeed, this is a great news at this time of crisis. And for me, this is the only law passed by this administration that they can be proud of (To think that the key authors like Senator Francis Escudero and Mar Roxas are from the opposition). We’re not actually expecting exemption from paying income tax, this is just for minimum wage earners. But this law also increases personal exemptions for other salaried employees like me.

It is estimated that this new law will provide additional take-home pay of P34 a day or P750 a month for minimum wage earners.

What we have been talking in the office is that under this new law, all holiday, night differential, hazard and overtime pay will also be tax exempt, both from the private and government sectors. Certainly, this is something that we can smile about.

The new law increases the personal exemption of single taxpayers from P20,000 to P50,000; head of family, P25,000 to P50,000; and married, P32,000 to P50,000. The deduction for each qualified dependent, not exceeding four, is increased from P8,000 to P25,000.

Sen. Escudero, one of the principal authors of the measure, said the government stands to lose P14.25 billion yearly in tax collections from the new law including P3.16 billion from minimum wage earners and P11.09 billion for additional exemptions.

Sen. Roxas II said that under the new law, an employee earning P455 per day or P10,010 per month would have an additional take-home pay of P472.59 per month or P5,671.02 a year if unmarried; P678.50 per month or P8,142.04 a year as head of the family; and P580.92 per month or P6,971.02 a year for those married with four children.

An employee earning P683 per day or P15,026 per month would have an additional take-home pay of P545.26 per month or P6,543.10 a year if unmarried; P1,307.18 per month or P15,686.20 a year as head of the family; and P1,190.52 per month or P14,286.20 a year for those married with four children.

Indeed, the workers could spend the additional money on the family’s needs such as food, medicine and tuition, especially with the rising cost of fuel and basic commodities.

Happy Father's Day!

This is something personal… I just want to honor a very special person who is responsible for what I have become… my father. I used to think that he favored my elder brother but now I’m not sure. The sure thing is we have our own share of misunderstandings and differences. Our minds often clash. His beliefs are very traditional and mine is progressive which have resulted in heated arguments and debates on even seemingly trivial issue as politics. And would you believe that in every election, we support opposing candidates and we race to influence other family members to side with either of us.

Yes, one thing that we have in common… we are both stubborn and we steadfastly clings to our principles in life.

I don’t know where it all started, I mean our differences. Of course, we don’t fight and I always end up obeying his rules but there’s that unmistakable difference in opinion. I have a very high respect for the man. What I can only recall is I grew up without him by my side. He worked abroad for a couple of years and those were my formative years.

Yes, he is not perfect and neither am I. I can even list a full page of his shortcomings but I know that I can also list twice more of my own fault as a child. To think that most people would consider me a good son is ironic.

Undoubtedly, whatever I have become I owe it to my father. The fact that I’m rational enough to stand by my principles and beliefs is a great indication that I was raised well. He let me think and do things my way. And I know that even with our differences in opinion, he is always there to support me in his own ways.

When I visited our house in the province a couple of years ago, I saw my novels and short stories neatly stacked under our center table for every visitor to see.

He never told me about this but I know that somehow, he is proud of what I have become. I never told him about this either, but I love the old man.

Happy father's day, Tatay!

The Alchemist ebook

Last month, I posted a book review about a novel I recently read and while i was looking for a file in my computer, i found it again scattered with other files. I have a folder dedicated to my ebook collection but since i just read this book, it was misplaced. "Big Bang"

While i'm blog-hopping, i stumbled upon a post from a fellow blogger, Kcee about this "Big Bang" that can boost Technorati authority. I took the opportunity to grab it and post it here. Thanks to her. So if you also want to grab this, feel free to do so.

*Start Copy Here*

You do not have to be tagged to play along. This game is simple and so are the rules.

1. Copy from *Start Copy Here* through *End Copy Here*

2. Add your site(s) to the list. Just be sure to post the "Big Bang" at each site you add.

3. Tag or don’t tag, your choice, however, the more tags you create the longer the list will grow.

4. Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving me a comment HERE. I will add you to the master list. (If you would like a scroll box code, leave me your email address and I will email it to you.) Scroll Box Example. (I decided not to use the box for the Big Bang for ease of copying.)
