Campaign Period

It’s almost 70 days before the 2010 Philippine Presidential elections. The campaign period started a couple of weeks ago although candidates have been bombarding the public with their campaign or “infomercials” on TV and radio since last year.

I initially thought that once the official campaign period has started, they will be able to enforce the Fair Elections Act and level the playing field, so to speak, since the Commission on Elections or COMELEC can now monitor the number of times a candidate`s advertisements were shown or aired on TV. Candidates who have billions of money to spend will need to limit their spending spree. But then again, this is easier said than done. With only a few months away from election, the election body has yet to show muscle in implementing the law. Streamers of national candidates are still scattered everywhere, even on public transport especially on buses. There were candidates who suddenly became generous and started giving so many things including scholarships to people during campaign sorties which is not only unfair but a clear violation of election laws.

Ensuring the success of this proceeding is imperative if the country wants to attain national solidarity and progress. A clean election can easily restore investor confidence for the country. But first, the people in charge should take their responsibilities seriously.

Ultimately, the voice of the people should prevail. I earnestly hope that the winner will get a clean mandate from the people. Every Filipino is dreaming for a clean and honest election. Let’s all work on making that dream a reality.

How to Choose the Right Article Directory.

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of ArticlesZoom.org. All opinions are 100% mine.

Logo
Any blogger knows that one sure way to promote your blog is by submitting articles in different article directories. Submitting your articles will build your reputation and credibility as an expert in your niche not to mention the increase in backlinks and traffic to your blogs. Of course, you will also get the chance to share your knowledge with a wider readership.

The questions are: how would you choose the right article directory on where you should submit your articles to? Is it wise to submit on all available article directories in the web?

To answer the first question, I don’t think that it is advisable to submit your articles to every available article directory. You have to choose the ones that will give you your desired results. It will be a complete waste of time if you will submit on all article directories out there.

So how would you choose the right article directory?

First, pick a free general article directory where readers and writers alike are free to browse through all submitted quality contents.

Second, you should choose an article directory that has a great deal of traffic not only from readers and fellow writers but also from publishers who may later syndicate your articles in their ezines or newsletters.

Third, you should also consider the different features of the article directory. Does it have a duplicate post checker or spam management?

One article directory that stands out for its uniqueness and different features is ArticlesZoom.org. Not only does it have the spam management and duplicate post checker but it also has a ping optimizer, author point system and Auto article checker among other features. You can also access the directory via your smartphone. Your articles will also be promoted via twitter once it passed the screening.

So if you haven’t tried submitting your articles to ArticlesZoom.org, visit their website now and read their submission guidelines. See you there!

Fun Friday - S is for Sunset

It’s Fun Friday once again at our Blogging for Fun group! We are still doing an A-Z meme and we are now at letter S. This will be a quick post since I'm not feeling well since yesterday and I badly needed a rest. For today's Fun Friday, S is not about my sickness, but S is for Sunset.

Sunset is an atmospheric condition that I really enjoy watching. It is created by the setting of the sun, the moment before and after it disappears below the horizon. I just love the intense colors formed during sunset.

They said that the intense orange and red hues of the sky during sunset are mainly caused by scattering of sunlight by dust particles, other solid aerosols, and liquid aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere.

Here are a couple of photos that I took during a visit in Zambales, Philippines. It was nature at its best.

Today is Ash Wednesday 2010

If you’re a busy person like me and you’re a Catholic, let me remind you that today is Ash Wednesday. Yes, it is the day signifying the start of the Lenten season.

Had I not sat beside a lady in the bus with a black cross mark on the forehead, this day would have passed unnoticed.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of imposing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a symbol of repentance. If you don’t know yet, the ashes used on Ash Wednesday are gathered from the burned Palm Crosses from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. In the Roman Catholic Church, this day is observed by repentance, fasting and abstinence from meat. But more importantly, it is a day of contemplating one’s transgressions.

For me, this day is the best reminder that we are more than our earthly possessions. Indeed, we are from dust and unto dust we shall return. It doesn’t matter how rich we are, how popular or powerful we have become in this world. In the end, we will leave all of these worldly possessions behind. What matters most is how we accept the truth that we are sinners and we fell short of what is expected of us as Christians. Yes, we are at the mercy of God’s love so let’s make everyday a testament of God’s eternal goodness.

May God richly bless us all this Lenten season!

Fil-Am Skater wins bronze in Vancouver Winter Olympics

A Filipino-American speed skater gave Filipinos another reason to cheer about when he bagged a bronze medal in the Short Track Speed Skating category of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.

John Robert "J.R." Celski who is representing the United States finishes at third place with a best time of 2:12.460 in the Men’s 1500 meters, according to the Winter Olympics website.

He trailed American Apolo Anton Ohno (2:11.072) and Lee Jung-Su of South Korea (2:10.949) who won the silver and gold medals respectively.

The 19-year-old half-Filipino, half-Polish speed skater also competed in the Men’s 5000 meter Relay and Men's 1000 meters.

According to his Vancouver 2010 page, Celski started with inline skating at the age of 3. He transferred to short track speed skating in 2002.

Celski failed to compete in the 2006 Winter Olympics because he missed the minimum age requirement by 17 days.

He graduated from secondary school in 2008 but opted to concentrate on his 2010 Vancouver bid instead of pursuing his college education.

He said that he plans to take up business or architecture at University of California Berkeley after the Olympics.

Although he is representing the United States in the Olympics, Celski is proud to have Filipino blood. His mother, Sue, is a full-blooded Filipina who hails from Isabela. He even boasts of a Philippine flag tattoo on his chest and is said to be a big fan of Filipino dishes like sinigang, lechon, and Longganisa.

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics will run until February 28.

A Message from an Entrecard "Ghost Dropper!"

Today is Valentine’s Day so I should be posting something about LOVE and I was prepared to discuss this topic when I opened my PC. Like I used to do, I started dropping Entrecards to keep me in the mood for writing. I dropped Entrecards while browsing other blogger’s posts and commenting when I have something good to say about the posts or some helpful insight about the article.

Then I stumbled upon a blog calling some EC droppers “cheaters” and “scammers”. I was shocked especially when I found one of my Entrecards listed there. I don’t know if this blog was previously listed but as of this writing, only my other blog Kapamilya Corner is listed in his post as one of those blogs “allegedly” scamming the EC system. I take it as a personal insult which is uncalled for. This guy badly needs attention and traffic so let’s give it to him. Unfortunately, I cannot put his link into this blog as I don’t want to dignify what he is doing to me and other fellow bloggers.

You can call me names but I resent it when someone calls me a cheater or a scammer. This person doesn’t even know me. I have never earned anything that is not a product of my hard work. I was personally offended once by a fellow blogger who plagiarized my blog post but I never called her names. I exposed her not without evidence (I had a screenshot of her blog with the copied article). I even demanded her to remove the article before I published the expose. Even though she probably earned a couple of dollars by copying my post, I never called her a cheater or a scammer. However misguided, she just wants to earn a living. There’s just so much negativity in the internet that I will not dare add to it.

I have been blogging for almost 2 years now and I don’t think that anybody can claim that I or any of my blogs has offended anyone. I have the utmost respect to my fellow bloggers especially those who are earning a living through blogging. But I believe that we can earn a living through blogging with decency and proper decorum.

I know my responsibility as a blogger. With all the problems and bad news in my country and this world that I can rant about, I choose to blog about the positive news, considering that the former is more appealing to readers and could give more traffic.

I can quit blogging anytime I want to. In case you want to know, this is not my bread and butter as I have a stable day job. I did not blog for about 2 months and I never missed a meal. Yes, I am earning a few dollars with my 2 blogs but I will gladly quit blogging if this will jeopardize my integrity as a person.

Some bloggers only want attention. Unfortunately, some want to be popular even at the expense of other people. Someone with good intentions can simply call the “erring” person’s attention about a perceived irregularity before exposing him/her to the public. Or he can report it to the concerned people (like Entrecard on this case) so they can do something about it. For all we know, some of these bloggers are misguided. They probably thought that they are using a system that is “legal”. Instead of warning other bloggers not to use systems designed to "cheat" Entrecard, he went on his way to attack these poor bloggers tagging them as “cheaters” and “scammers.”

What a waste of energy!

I don’t need to defend myself here. If I receive a message from Entrecard asking me to explain then I would. But I am not a ghost dropper. I wouldn’t have read this blogger’s article if I wasn’t visiting his site. I only dropped EC’s on blogs that are in my Inbox and if there’s ample time, I also dropped to those that are in the top of their categories. I am not even using a special drop-list like other EC members are using. That is why you will not see my blogs on the top droppers’ list of any blog, I only drop EC’s when I have the time and most of the time, I don’t have it. I don’t even promote my other blog since its theme is local entertainment. This is the reason why I chose not to include my other blog in my Blogging For Fun group since most of my fellow bloggers who are from overseas will surely not appreciate its content.

I don’t want anything more than RESPECT from my fellow bloggers. I don’t agree that respect is something that needs to be earned. All of us deserve a certain amount of respect. I don’t visit bloggers spamming their comment forms or shoutboxes begging for everybody to visit my blogs. If you don’t want me visiting your blogs or dropping EC’s on your precious blog, then say so. My time is precious just like yours.

Lastly, I would like to thank Melissa who is the leader of our Blogging for Fun group. She has been very kind and supportive to all the members of the group. You are a dear friend!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you! Let’s RESPECT and LOVE one another.

Electricity Tips

Electricity cost takes on a regular chunk of our monthly budget. I pay almost Php2000 a month for my electricity consumption. Only recently, I heard over the news that there will be an increase in the cost of electricity. That will only mean that I will need to shell out more money for our electricity consumption which could have been spent on some other important things.

What is even more frustrating is when I heard of the news that there will be rotating brownouts in some areas of the country because of the shutdown of power plants that were supplying electricity to the Manila Electric Co.

What we can only do is to do our part in conserving electricity. So here are easy yet useful techniques from Meralco on how you can lower our consumption and, consequently, our electric bill.

General Appliances

• Keep your appliances well maintained. They operate more efficiently and use less energy when in good working order.
• When shopping for appliances, you can think of two price tags. The first one covers the purchase price. Think of it as a down payment. The second price tag is the cost of operating the appliance during its lifetime. You'll be paying on that second price tag every month with your utility bill for the next 10 to 20 years, depending on the appliance. Refrigerators last an average of 20 years; room air conditioners and dishwashers, about 10 years each; clothes washers, about 14 years.
• Unplug all electronic equipment when not in use. Make sure you unplug a transformer or voltage regulator when not in use so it does not heat up and consume more electricity.

Lighting

• Use natural light whenever possible. It is the best source of light and will help you save kilowatt hours. Strategically arrange your household in such a way that you can use natural light. Place reading tables near windows and put skylights in other working areas.
• Use lamps that provide direct lighting over desks, beds, and other work areas. Using them saves energy instead of the higher wattage lighting used to illuminate the whole room.
• Use low wattage light bulbs in areas that do not need strong lighting such as hallways, foyers and doorways.
• Turn off lights when not needed.
• Clean lighting fixtures regularly. Dirt lessens illumination by as much as 50%. One can work more effectively under good lighting which lessens the hours of operation of the lamps. In contrast, poor lighting will make someone work longer thus increasing electrical consumption. Regular cleaning of lamps will help provide proper lighting in your workplace.
• Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Although CFLs cost higher than incandescent bulbs, they use up only 25% of the energy being used up by incandescent bulbs. A 16-watt CFL produces the same light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb at a quarter of the energy cost. CFLs also last eight times longer thank incandescent bulbs.

Washing Machines

• Maximize the operation of your washing machine. Fill water level appropriate for the size of the load. If your washing machine doesn’t have different water level selections for different loads, observe washing in full loads. This is more energy efficient than washing two small loads. However, do not overload your unit. Overloading makes your machine work harder and inefficiently.
• Use proper amount of detergent. Too many suds may require extra rinsing which makes your machine use more energy.
• Do not over-wash clothes. Different types of clothes require different wash cycles. Delicate clothes do not take as long as dirty work clothes.
• Presoak soiled garments to avoid using additional wash cycles.
• When using your spinner, make sure that water is drained from the cylinder and clothes are squeezed to effectively spin-dry clothes.
• Properly place your clothes inside the spinner to avoid unnecessary vibrations which would prevent the spinner from functioning efficiently.

Clothes Dryer

• Sort clothes when drying. The dryer operates most efficiently when drying clothes of the same thickness. Dry heavy clothes such as cotton towels, jeans, or jackets separately from light clothing such as underwear and summer clothes. Light-weight clothes take less drying time than a mixture of items.
• Make sure that clothes are effectively squeezed before putting them inside the dryer.
• Run only on full loads, as small loads are less economical. However, don’t overload the machine. Air needs to be able to circulate around the clothes to properly dry them.
• Don’t over-dry clothes. If your machine has a moisture sensor, use it. If it has a timer, consider shortening the drying time.
• Dry two or more loads in a row and make use of the hot air that’s already in the dryer from the first load.
• Locate your dryer in a warm and dry space. A clothes dryer in a cold or damp basement will have to work harder to get your clothes dry.
• Clean the fluff out of the filter before every load to allow better air circulation. Regularly clean the lint from vent hoods and lint kits.
• Regularly inspect the outside dryer vent. If it doesn’t close tightly, replace it. You’ll keep outside air from leaking in, reducing heating and/or cooling bills.
• Hang clothes to dry on sunny days to lessen use of dryer.

Clothes Iron

• Iron large batches of clothing at one time to avoid wasting energy and reheating the iron several times.
• Dampen clothes moderately. Excessively moistened clothes take longer to iron.
• Do not overheat the iron. Set the temperature appropriately for the type of clothes to avoid scorching and wasting energy.
• Iron first those fabrics that require lower temperature to reduce warm up time, and then work up to those requiring higher heat.
• Switch the iron off in the last few minutes of ironing. The remaining heat will be enough to press lighter materials.
• Lessen your ironing hours by not ironing everything. By removing clothing promptly from the dryer/clothesline and folding them carefully, many items will require no ironing, or just a quick press. It is also unnecessary to iron towels, drip-dry shirts, etc.

Fun Friday - P is for Pandanggo sa Ilaw

It is Fun Friday once again for our Blogging For Fun group and this will be my first Fun Friday article after my two months of absence in the blogosphere. Well, I already missed a lot of topics for our A-Z meme so I better join the fun now. So here’s for the letter P, it is still something Filipino. This time, I want you to get acquainted with the Filipino culture and arts.

"Pandanggo sa Ilaw" is a folk dance of grace and balance originated from Lubang Island, Mindoro in the Visayas region of the Philippines. The term “pandanggo” was derived from the Spanish word fandango, which is a popular dance characterized by lively steps and hand-clapping that varies in rhythm in 3/4 beat or triple meter.

This unique and colorful dance requires skill in balancing three lighted oil lamps or “tinghoy”, one on the head and at the palms of each hand. The beat is just like the Spanish fandango and it is also characterized by lively steps and hand-clapping. The lights of the lamps are said to represent fireflies that are fluttering in the night.

A good number of Philippine folk dances were originally patterned after European dances during the Spanish colonial rule in the country. But despite its adaptation to western dances, Filipinos still pay tribute to their cultural roots. In fact, every region in the islands has its own folk dances which were performed attractively in various festivals. These have been added to the country’s apparent contribution to the world’s illustration of traditional culture and arts.

To appreciate the beauty of this dance, please watch the video below from likha.org.

Manny Pacquiao, honored as the best fighter of the decade

Filipino pride and boxing icon Manny Pacquaio was voted as Fighter of the Decade by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) on Monday topping other boxing stars nominated for the prestigious award. He bested fellow boxing stars Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera for the distinction.

The period from 2000 to 2009 saw Manny Pacquiao winning six of his record-setting titles in seven weight division. He bagged world titles at junior featherweight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight divisions. He owned his first championship in 1999 at the flyweight division.
