It's Jessica and Phillip on American Idol Finale!

Filipino-Mexican-American singer Jessica Sanchez made history as the first finalist of American-Asian decent to reach the last round of America’s most popular TV show.

Joshua Ledet, who received another standing ovation from the judges on yesterday’s performance night, failed to make the cut. He garnered the lowest number of votes from "Idol" viewers, setting the stage for a showdown between Sanchez and Phillip Phillips.

Host Ryan Seacrest announced that they received over 90 million votes after Wednesday's show.

The tense results show saw performances from Lisa Marie Presley and former "Idol" contestant Adam Lambert. Seacrest called the contestants for the results, and announced that Sanchez made it to the finals, followed by Phillips.

Sanchez and Phillips will face each other in a sing-off on May 22. The results will be announced on May 23.

A win next week by the 16-year-old singer will make her the first female "Idol" since Jordin Sparks beat Blake Lewis in Season 6. She will also be the first "Idol" with Asian and Latino roots to win the title. More importantly, she will become the youngest "Idol" winner if she beats Phillips.

Jessica Sanchez now part of American Idol's Top 3

Filipino-Mexican-American singer Jessica Sanchez is now part of the top 3 of American Idol Season 11 after she was saved by American voters Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila). Over 70 million votes were cast.

Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Philip Philips completed the top 3 and will compete for the prestigious title this season. Hollie Cavanagh was eliminated from the show.

Sanchez scored another standing ovation from the judges Wednesday night (Thursday in Manila) after her powerful rendition of the song “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” from the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.”

Idol judge Steven Tyler called it as another “over the top” performance from the 16-year-old singer.

Jennifer Lopez was equally wowed by Sanchez’s vocal ability and she said that it seems that it’s going to be a race to the finish.

Randy Jackson said that Sanchez picked “one of the hardest songs in the world to sing but you slayed it.”

Sanchez is the second Filipino-American singer who made it to the top 3 in the history of the popular TV show next to Jasmine Trias who placed third on the third season of American Idol.

Another Standing Ovation for Jessica Sanchez

With only four competitors left in the popular US TV show American Idol, Filipino-Mexican-American singer Jessica Sanchez scored another standing ovation from the judges after her powerful rendition of the song “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” from the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila).

After almost getting eliminated when she got the lowest number of votes during the Top 7 performance show, her performance this week was a powerful declaration that she isn’t going anywhere without showing off what she’s got.

And the three judges agreed by giving her another standing ovation – her first since getting the "Idol" judges to their feet when she sang a duet with Joshua Ledet on "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me."

Record producer and mentor Jimmy Iovine said during the rehearsals that if the audience sees and the judges see what he saw, it could be game over.

Idol judge Steven Tyler called it as another “over the top” performance from the 16-year-old singer.

Jennifer Lopez was equally wowed by Sanchez’s vocal ability and she said that it seems that it’s going to be a race to the finish.

Randy Jackson said that Sanchez picked “one of the hardest songs in the world to sing but you slayed it.”

For the “California Dreamin’ “ round, Sanchez also drew praises for her rendition of Etta Jame’s hit song “Steal Away” with a jazz band.

She started the song while sitting on a grand piano and she carried the song effortlessly displaying her versatility as a singer.

“I loved it. That showed the other side of your voice,” said Tyler.

Lopez thought the performance was “crazy,” calling Sanchez as one of the greatest female singers she has heard in a long time.

Jackson, for his part, said that Sanchez can actually sing anything and that she can tap on the original singer’s soulfulness even at a young age.

“I love the whole vibe of that. The blues is so much soul so much heart in it. That’s what it’s all about. Your vocals are ridiculous. That girl can sing the phone book. Amazing, again,” he said.

Only four competitors remain on "Idol" -- Sanchez, Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Hollie Cavanagh.

The Goodness of Man

The Bible said that men are created in the image and likeness of God. I would like to believe that since we are created by God we must have even a tinge of goodness in our hearts even if we have been scarred by sin.

Yes, we know people who have done inexplicably wicked things. We can all see it on TV, there are people who live by taking advantage of other people, people who cheat and con even their friends and family. But I still believe that there are more good men out there, people who are ready to help, people who are compassionate and God-fearing.

If people don’t believe the goodness of man; how can they believe in the goodness of God?

Here is a story taken from Tonne and was included in Fr. Mihalic’s collection of stories:

A wealthy businessman in a mid-western town had signs printed and placed all over the town. They stated that if any man in the town who owed debts, would come to his office on a certain day between nine and twelve in the morning, he would pay the debts.

Naturally, that promise was the talk of the town. Very few believed it. They thought there was a catch somewhere.

The day came; the businessman sat in his office at nine. By ten, no one had come. At eleven, a man was seen walking up and down outside, glancing occasionally at the office door. Finally, he opened it, put his head in, and asked, “Is it true that you will pay any man’s debt?”
“That’s right,” the rich man replied. “Are you in debt?”
“I certainly am,” the man said.
“Do you have along the bills or statements to prove it.”

The visitor produced the documents and the businessman wrote out a cheque covering all of them. Before twelve o’clock two other men came, and also had their debts paid.

People outside could not believe it… but there was no time left for them to have their bills paid.

Sanchez now part of American Idol's Top 4

Filipino-Mexican-American singer Jessica Sanchez has survived another elimination and is now part of the Top 4 of the 11th season of American Idol.

Sanchez gained enough votes to land in the Top 4 while country singer Skylar Laine was voted out this week after landing at the bottom 2.

Laine was joined by Hollie Cavanagh in the bottom 2 but the latter will advance to the next level and will join Sanchez, Phillip Phillips and Joshua Ledet in the Top 4.

Sanchez received mixed reviews for her performances on Wednesday night (US time). She failed to impress American Idol judge Randy Jackson in her rendition of the song “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner.

"You took on probably the biggest dragon of the night... It didn't really quite sit with me," Jackson said.

But fellow Idol judge Jennifer Lopez said Sanchez looked so grown-up when she got on stage tonight that she forgot she is only 16 years old.

The Fil-Am singer’s performance of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful” received lavish praises from all three judges. "This girl's in the top of the leaderboard right now," Jackson said.

"You, once again, showed America just how beautiful your voice is. You're going to be No. 1, girl," Steven Tyler added.

Agua De Mayo

The heavy rains that fell yesterday afternoon in some parts of the country was a welcome surprise as it cooled down the temperature. It was a respite from the sweltering heat that the country has been experiencing in the last few weeks.

The rain yesterday was considered something special as it fell on the 1st day of May. Filipinos dubbed it as “Agua De Mayo” or Waters of May. It is believed that the rain on May 1st would bring good health and good luck. Some people even believed that these rains have curative properties that it can heal sickness.

Agua de Mayo became a trending topic on microblogging site Twitter yesterday and was widely discussed on other social networking sites.

My mother and grandmother used to tell me that I should bathe in the first rains of May as they said that it would bring good luck and my wishes would also come true.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said that the rains were due to a prevailing low pressure area which was seen yesterday near Puerto Princesa City. In fact, Visayas and Mindanao have experienced rains in the last few days.

The weather bureau also clarified that summer has not yet ended and that the onset of the rainy season will not take place until the last days of May. It explained that the rains were due to a sudden local thunderstorm. Because of the high temperature, water also evaporated abruptly which formed water vapors that produced heavy rain clouds.
