Ash Wednesday 2012

Had I not sat beside a lady in the bus with a black cross mark on the forehead, this day would have passed without me noticing its significance. If you’re a busy person like me and you’re a Catholic, today is Ash Wednesday. It is the day signifying the start of the Lenten season.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of imposing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a symbol of repentance. According to tradition, the ashes used on Ash Wednesday are gathered from the burned Palm Crosses from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. In the Roman Catholic Church, this day is observed by repentance, fasting and abstinence from meat. But more importantly, it is a day of contemplating one’s transgressions.

For me, this day is the best reminder that we are more than our earthly possessions. Indeed, we are from dust and unto dust we shall return. It doesn’t matter how rich we are, how popular or powerful we have become in this world, in the end, we will leave all of these worldly possessions behind. What matters most is how we accept the truth that we are sinners and we fell short of what is expected of us as Christians. Yes, we are at the mercy of God’s love so let’s make everyday a testament of God’s eternal goodness.

May God richly bless us all this Lenten season!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Love is in the air as couples celebrate Valentine's Day. Although this celebration is heavily commercialized, this is the time when people focus on love and appreciation from their loved ones. It's not everyday that a woman will get a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates from her boyfriend or husband. Some will even pull off extravagant surprises and shower their partners with expensive gifts.

There is nothing wrong with that. However, let this day be celebrated as it should be. A celebration of love. And we should be celebrating love not only every Valentine's Day but every day of our lives.

'Unofficially Yours' opens on February 15

The film which has taken the social networking sites by storm long before its official release set to hit theaters nationwide on February 15. The movie “Unofficially Yours” starring John Lloyd Cruz and Angel Locsin is Star Cinema's official Valentine's Day offering.

The film tackles the subject of casual relationships and poses the question: Does love between two people still requires commitment and promises to make it grow?

The romantic comedy film is directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.

Donaire wins his fourth world boxing title

Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire earned his fourth world boxing title after he won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title by defeating his Puerto Rican opponent Wilfred Vasquez Jr via split decision at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas yesterday.

Two of the judges scored the fight 117-110 in favor of the Filipino fighter, while the other judge gave the bout to Vazquez, 115-112.

Donaire dominated the fight despite sustaining an injury on his left hand during the fourth round. It was his first fight at the 122-pound division after winning the WBC and WBO bantamweight belts.

He said in an interview that Vazquez was tougher than he expected. He added that he couldn’t find his rhythm and he hurt his hand somewhere between the second and fourth rounds.

Vazquez hit the canvass in the ninth round after Donaire tagged him with a combination of right uppercut-left hook. Although the Puerto Rican fighter managed to get back up, he was visibly stunned.

Donaire was the busier fighter in the entire bout. He uses his longer reach and jab to target his opponent from long range. Vazquez started to engage Donaire in the middle rounds, the two boxers exchanging punches from close range in the sixth and seventh rounds. But the knockout came in the ninth round which sealed the Filipino fighter’s victory.
