PR Update and A New Call Center Blog

I just realized that there was a PR update recently and this blog was able to maintain its PR1. I am taking it positively, I was expecting an improvement on this blog’s Pagerank but it seems that my efforts weren’t good enough. At least, I still have a page rank. Sadly, my other blog has dropped to PR 2 from its PR3.

I hope that things will change for the better next time.

Anyway, I just started promoting a new blog in the blogosphere. It is called A Call Boy's Blog. It is not actually new, but newer than this blog, I just don’t have the time to promote it. This blog was conceived when I was still in my early months working as a call center agent. I will try to compile in this blog all the available resources that will help those that are interested in pursuing a career in the call center industry as well as my personal insights and experiences in this job that I’m very much willing to share. This is the least that I can do to help this industry that I have learned to hate… and to love.

However, since this blog was created specifically for Filipinos, a few of the posts are written in the vernacular, some are in Tagalog-English. I now have about 25 posts in the blog, so if you want to take a peek, visit me at the link below:

See you there!

Time to visit a dentist.

My long overdue visit to the dentist will hopefully end this weekend. I will be seeking an appointment with a dentist later and hopefully, I will be able to see one on Saturday or Sunday. This may not be a top priority but this could surely save me time and inconveniences in the future. It’s a good thing that dental services are covered by my health card so I don’t need to spend a penny.

Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent toothaches and dental emergencies. A dentist can surely identify early signs of problems with teeth or gums. If gum diseases, cavities and broken fillings are detected earlier, they can be easily treated. But if these problems go untreated you may be looking at more costly operations like root canals, gum surgery or tooth extraction.

I only learned recently that there’s another treatment method in dentistry that I hope has already reached the Philippines. It is called Neuromuscular Dentistry; it incorporates state-of-the-art technology as it objectively focuses on correcting misalignment of the jaw then creates a non-surgical treatment plan for therapy.

This is certainly welcome news to those that are looking for alternative method of treating TMJ (temporomandibular joint) Dysfunction. But as they said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So let’s visit our dentist regularly to avoid debilitating diseases.

Amazing TV Commercials.

Today is another busy day at the office but I was able to go home earlier than usual. We normally have meetings or trainings after our shift and sometimes, I had to stay for an hour or two to finish a couple of tasks. I’m not complaining and nobody asked me to spend more time working, I just want everything in order before I leave the office. Anyway, I was able to relax a bit and I had the time to sit in front of the television mostly watching commercials and advertisements. I was amazed on how some of the commercials nowadays are skillfully crafted. Have you seen the latest Coca-cola and Sprite commercials?

Indeed, the days when advertising only entails a few lines of printed black ink in a locally circulated newspaper are gone. Information has proven to become more visual in today’s world. No wonder different companies spend thousands of dollars to come up with a television advertisements or promotional videos. Most companies hire professional multimedia post production companies to do the job.

But why would you pay a company to do something that you can do yourself? If results really matter, you should seek the best in the industry. You have to make sure that you get your money’s worth when it comes to the quality of the film or video. Of course, if this will represent your company, it should be professionally done and should be at par with full scale movies in terms of quality.

Well, the next time you saw the latest TV commercial, just think of the thousands or millions of dollars a company spent just to get your attention.

In search of a new home.

I’ve been working in the call center industry for more than three years now and at the same time I have always been renting an apartment near my workplace. It was more practical and convenient since I’ve been moving from one call center to another. I’ve worked with 3 call centers to date and I’ve rented 3 apartments as well.

Just a few months ago, I’ve decided to look for condos and townhouses near Metro Manila. I realized that the money I’m paying for the monthly rent is almost the same as the monthly amortization of a house and lot on a subdivision near Metro Manila. Of course, it is much better to pay the monthly dues of my own house than to pay the rent for somebody else’s apartment.

So Donna and I searched the internet for condominiums for sale or rent-to-own and even subdivisions with affordable equities. We went tripping to condominiums or subdivision locations to help us decide the best house for us. I even attended a PAG-IBIG seminar to see if I can apply for a housing loan.

My friend who now has a stable job in New York is in the same situation. He told me that he is also looking for NYC condos for sale. He has finally decided to settle down in the Big Apple with his wife. He even sent an email to me recently with photos and links of different properties that he already visited. The condominium units are very beautiful although some are very expensive. He has not yet decided on which of the properties to purchase but he said he is not in a hurry.

With a limited budget, Donna and I finally decided to acquire a property in Sta. Maria, Bulacan. It is a quiet community about an hour drive from Manila. It may not be our dream house yet, but good enough for a start.

Filipino Pride: Brillante Mendoza Named Best Director in Cannes Festival

This year’s Cannes Festival saw distinguished and renowned filmmakers like Ang Lee (“Taking Woodstock”), Quentin Tarantino (“Inglourious Basterds”), Jane Campion (“Big Star”) and other heavyweight Asian and European directors competing for the coveted best director prize. But it was a Filipino filmmaker who took home the glory last Sunday.

Brillante Mendoza of the Philippines bagged the best director prize at the Cannes film festival for his dark movie "Kinatay" (The Execution of P). “Kinatay” is a Tagalog word meaning Butchered. The movie was among the 20 films who vied for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Mendoza is not new to Cannes Festival; he was also in Cannes last year for his movie “Serbis.” Like Serbis, "Kinatay" also received mixed reviews from various critics who regarded Mendoza as the "love-him-or-hate-him" director.

“Kinatay” tells the gruesome fate of a kidnap-rape victim who is beaten up before she is murdered and hacked into pieces.

Aside from "Kinatay," two other Filipino films made the cut in Cannes. Adolfo Alix Jr. and Raya Martin's "Manila", starring Piolo Pascual, was one of ten films given a special screening but it did not compete in Cannes while Martin's "Independencia" is under the Un Certain Regard category.

Thank you for making all Filipinos proud, Direk! Congratulations!

Fun Friday - Dumb laws in the Philippines

For this week’s Fun Friday, the topic is dumb laws where you live. I think it's good that I can not think of any dumb laws in the Philippines straight away aside from laws changing the street names or establishments after the name of the President’s father or any other political figure, hehehe. Well, some of the laws are good but the implementation is the problem.

I tried to search the internet for dumb laws in the Philippines and the only information that I got was from dumblaws.com. They pointed out MMDA’s unified number-coding system as a dumb law wherein vehicles whose license plates end with a 1 or 2 are not allowed on the roads on Monday, 3 or 4 on Tuesday, 5 or 6 on Wednesday, 7 or 8 on Thursday, and 9 or 0 on Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

I don’t think that this is a dumb law, at all. The idea here is to reduce the volume of traffic on the streets by 20 percent everyday. And it was effective to some extent. However, car owners are on the losing end. Imagine not being able to drive your car one day every week? Well, I don’t have a car so it is not a big deal for me, lol. On the bright side, car owners will get to save on fuel during those days that they will not be able to drive their cars.

There is another law in the Philippines, that some considered stupid. It is one of the provisions of the Urban Development and Housing Act where squatters or trespassers who disregard property rights cannot be evicted and their illegal structures cannot be demolished without finding a relocation site for them or paying them first. How stupid is that??

Can you think of any other dumb laws in the Philippines or where you live?

MYX Daily Top 10 (May 21, 2009) Featuring Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow

Okay, so Kris Allen is this season’s American Idol. It is a pleasant surprise to all his fans and a major disappointment to all Adam Lambert supporters. I was one of those who were surprised; I was expecting an easy win for Adam. Well, both of them are great artists and I’m sure that they will find their own rightful place in the music industry.

In the local music scene, Miley Cyrus is still on top of the MYX countdown with her song “The Climb” with Idol winner David Cook on the second spot.

Black Eyed Peas who also performed in the Idol season finale debuts at #10 with Boom Boom Pow. I missed their performance and I don’t know if Fil-Am apl.de.ap or Allan Pineda in real life performed with the group.

Anyway, here’s the top ten hottest music in the country today:

No to plagiarism!

I rarely post memes or tags on this blog but when I stumbled upon this meme from Juliana’s Lair, I am compelled to take part. If you have been reading my previous blog posts, you will know that I was recently victimized by a fellow blogger who plagiarized my blog content.

I’m not alone, after all. It turns out that this plagiarist on the loose was the same blogger who victimized Juliana. Now, I don’t know if my decision to expose the blogger and take the subtle route (confronting the other blogger to remove the article) was a wise decision. I should have sought this fellow victim’s advice to make sure my actions will not jeopardize her own efforts to make this copycat liable for this misdemeanor. I absolutely support her on this cause.

For now, the least I can do is to support this cause against plagiarism and raise awareness to fellow bloggers. Please don’t hesitate to take part on this cause against plagiarism.

Please copy from here and share:

What is Plagiarism?

According to the Dictionary, Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.

To all Bloggers who exert effort to create noteworthy entries and who continue to maintain a Blog which is a reflection of who she / he is,” Good job! ”

To those who have the desire to Blog but are merely scraping contents from other people‘s materials,” Whether you are monetizing your site to help you with your basic needs or to satisfy some of your wants, do it the proper way. Stop making money out of someone else’s work. Otherwise, you are nothing but a common thief! ”

Thank you!

Fun Friday - Two Things That I Cannot Live Without.

For this week’s Fun Friday, the topic is to name two things you absolutely cannot live without. Say in a disaster, or end of the world situation, what two things you could not go without.

Hmm, this is quite hard for me since I can easily let go of material things when needed. I even tried living 3 months without a cellphone, an unimaginable feat in this technological age. I decided to ask the help of my girlfriend, Donna who said she cannot live without her perfumes and bags. I asked her what two things I can not live without and without hesitation, she said I cannot live without my computer and my wallet.

I spend about 12 hours a day in front of a computer monitor: 8 hours in the office and 4 hours at home surfing the internet and blogging. Donna would even tease me that I’m spending more time with my computer than with her, lol. I’m just so thankful that she understands.

Another thing that I can live without is my wallet. I don’t leave the house without my wallet which has, aside from cash, all of my ATM cards, Identification cards, contact numbers, health card and even a notepad where I can write ideas and thoughts that would suddenly pop up out of nowhere. I would surely be helpless without my wallet.

A plagiarized blog content.

I don’t usually open my Gmail Inbox as it is always full of spam, mostly emails congratulating me for winning the lottery or hitting the jackpot on a raffle draw that I never recalled joining. But what caught my attention is an email with the subject “Plagiarized blog content” that came from a concerned blog reader.

I was surprised when I read the email, I never thought that this will happen to me. Apparently, one of my articles on my other blog was copied by another blogger without giving due credit or acknowledging the source. I don’t want to dignify this blogger and put his/her link on this blog but in case you’re interested to know what blog is this, you can email me and I would be happy to send you the blog’s link. You may find some of your articles there too, lol. I will not be surprised if there are other bloggers out there who have been victimized by this blogger who lacks creativity. I don’t know why somebody will decide to become a blogger when he/she cannot even write his/her own content or have the decency to acknowledge that he/she has copied it from another blogger.

To think that the article is a paid post made it even worse. Yes, this blogger just earned a couple of dollars just by copying somebody else's creation. Well, he/she did change the title of the article and added another paragraph but still, most of it were copied word for word from my post.

I want to act on this but I don’t know where to start. I know that I can report to search engines like Google and Yahoo but aside from that I don’t know where else to go.

Below is the email that I received, without the other blogger’s link. I have the blog’s screenshot instead.

Hi!

I stumbled upon your site and it was a surprise to find out and see an identical article on someone's site. Your article about Direct TV with this link: http://2forlife.blogspot.com/2009/03/make-switch-to-direct-tv.html is very identical to this link: xxxxxx. I'm not sure if you own both sites but from the looks of it, I don't think it's possible.

I assume this is an article that you wrote and got paid for, and it would be such a shame to allow the other person to use your content and also get paid for it: your own creation.

FYI. You should act on this and report the other blogger to the proper authorities. It's a concern to see someone get violated like this.

Here's the screenshot of the blog, you can click on it for a larger view:

A Friend in New York.

A friend who is currently working in New York sent me an email yesterday. She recounted her experiences in the Big Apple, on how they visited different places and landmarks. She said that it’s a good thing she brought a reliable digital camera with her and she was able to take heaps of photos. Unfortunately, I don’t have her permission to share the photos that she sent me on this blog. Anyway, most of the photos were taken from Brooklyn and the Empire State Building. She also had a photo in the statue of Liberty. I can tell from the photos that my friend absolutely had a great time.

She said that to make their New York Sightseeing more memorable, they simply bought tickets for the best-value double-decker sightseeing package which already included trips to major attractions and activities. She said that they took on museum visits and they are planning to go on a Night tour to get an absolutely amazing view of the city.

Well, life in a foreign land may not be all fun for Filipinos like my friend. They need to work hard to send money for their families in the Philippines. It’s good to see them having fun even if they are miles away from their loved ones.

Happy Mother's Day 2009!

zwani.com myspace graphic comments
Myspace Mothers Day Graphics

In whatever language, mother is unquestionably the most adorable and the most beautiful word. This word stands for a world of things a mother gives to her child along with the sacrifices, sorrows and grief she has to undergo for her children’s happiness. Indeed, you can have a number of husbands or wives but you can only have one mother. She is simply irreplaceable. That is why the most important person in an individual’s life is his or her mother.

Here’s an inspiring story about Mother’s Day from TheHolidayspot.com that I also posted here a year ago.

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away.

As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing.

He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother.
But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars."

The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose."

He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers.
As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home.

She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother."

She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.

The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house.

Please don't forget to greet your mother on this special occasion. Happy mother’s day to all mothers out there!

MYX Daily Top 10 (May 8, 2009)

This is just a quick post to update everyone on the hottest music videos in the Philippines. I will be spending the night at my girlfriend’s house in Parañaque because tomorrow is a busy day for the two of us. We will be attending two birthday celebrations. We need to be in Parañaque for her niece’s birthday celebration in the morning after which we will travel about 3 or 4 hours to be in Bulacan for my sister’s birthday in the afternoon. Our presence is expected on both occasions and we don’t want any animosity from any of our families just because we prioritize one occasion over the other.

My apologies to my Blogging for Fun Yahoo Group, I will not be able to participate this time. I will be looking forward to reading your posts about this week’s Fun Friday theme.

Advance Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!

A little Housekeeping and Top 10 EC droppers for April.

If you haven’t noticed, I did a little housekeeping on this blog. I removed a few widgets and ads that are not serving its purpose. I also noticed that my blog roll requires updating. Some of these bloggers are no longer active and some I may have offended and has deliberately deleted my link on their blogs, lol.

I had misgivings about keeping the top EC droppers widget as I really want to thank these dedicated droppers but the widget had problems, it was not always loading properly. I finally decided to remove it but in lieu of that widget, I will be posting the top 10 EC droppers for every month. So here are the top 10 EC droppers for the month of April.

Thank you very much to all of you!

Filipino Pride: Pacman rules! Knocks out Hatton in second round

(Photo by Al Bello/ Getty Images)

After all that was said and done about the Pacquaio-Hatton fight, only one man emerges victorious. And it turns out to be the Filipino boxing champion. Indeed, there were even more national anthems played than the fight rounds in the most anticipated boxing fight of the year.

Manny Pacquiao came out too stong for the British fighter. The Filipino fighter dropped Ricky Hatton twice in the first round and knocked him cold at the end of the second to score a stoppage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The Filipino, who is now considered as the pound-for-pound king, was fighting in his fourth different weight class. He is now the only fighter in history to have won linear title in four different weight classes.

Once again, Manny Pacquiao made all Filipinos proud. Mabuhay ka, Manny!

Balut: Gross food that I love on Fun Friday.

For today’s Fun Friday, our topic is to name at least one gross food that we love. Now, I can name a couple of gross foods that I like but I guess one is enough for this purpose lest you may think of me as a freak, lol.

Now, I have to warn you, this is really a gross food to most people and I don't mean to scare anybody, I'm just having fun here. You may have even seen this food eaten as one of the challenges in TV shows like Fear Factor or Survivor to disgust contestants but in the Philippines, balut or a boiled fertilized duck egg with nearly-developed embryo inside is a common street food. Most foreigners are grossed out by the idea but this food is popularly believed to be an aphrodisiac and considered a high-protein snack.

I love balut but I don’t eat it that often. The last time I ate one was three or four months ago. I don’t usually eat the chick but I like the juice and the yolk. I know people who can eat five or more baluts in one sitting (and they are not being paid to do it!). It is being sold at the street mostly at night time probably because it’s best to eat it in a dimly lit place so you wouldn’t see how it looks, lol.

But with all the positive vibes and the stigma attached to eating this food, balut has become part of the Filipino culture.
