“Be Prepared!” This is the Boy Scout motto which can also be embraced by people including the government authorities to minimize the destruction wrought by disasters. The onslaught of tropical storm “Ondoy” should serve as a wake-up call for all of us to be prepared in times of calamities.
We should also be prepared to rescue ourselves and not just rely on the government to rescue us. The heart-rending sight of hundreds of people marooned and helpless on the roofs of their houses submerged in floodwaters, desperately waiting for help for hours, is an indication that the authorities were not prepared for the magnitude of this disaster.
Understandably, we cannot predict when a disaster will strike but at least we should have an emergency plan in place. I don’t want to blame anybody for their inefficiency in the face of this unforeseen disaster but if the government cannot provide a timely response and assistance to victims then they should start to focus their efforts on empowering people and train them on how to be self-reliant and protect themselves in times of disasters. Residents themselves should be prepared to rescue themselves and not rely on supposed rescue groups which may not be forthcoming or helpful in times of disaster. Communities or barangays should be trained in disaster preparedness. If we were conducting fire drills and other emergency preparedness training, we should also conduct training on what to do in case of other natural disasters and calamities. They should know where to go and what to do.
When I was still a Boy Scout, one of the many things we were taught was an emergency or disaster preparedness. I hope that this is still being taught on today’s generation of scouts. In fact, it will be better if disaster preparedness can be taught not only in scouting but also as a subject or part of the curriculum in schools nationwide.
In the tragic upshot of this disaster, we can only wish we had more efficient ways of doing things. We hope that we have a more efficient weather forecasting and a more efficient rescue and relief operations.
One saving grace is some people’s display of heroism in the midst of disasters; Filipinos showed that they care for one another. We have plenty of stories of people who risked their own lives to save their friends and the lives of complete strangers. Some people and organization sprung into action without much prodding, they volunteered and they offered help. Indeed, nations are molded by crises. And crisis also brings out the best in all of us.

State of Calamity.
I have never been so happy to see the sunrise as this morning. Really, this is a great reason to be thankful and to count even small blessings from the Lord. This is in the midst of reports of a growing number of people killed and displaced by extensive flooding in the metropolitan Manila and nearby municipalities in the Philippines due to the onslaught of tropical storm Ondoy (international code name Ketsana). As of writing, the death toll now rose to 73 based on the TV Patrol World newscast.
Earlier in the day, a state of national calamity has been declared over 27 provinces in 7 regions, as well as in the NCR. The provinces included are Mountain Province, Ifugao, and Benguet (CAR); Pangasinan, La Union, and Ilocos Sur (Region I); Isabela, Quirino, and Nueva Vizcaya (Region II); Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Bataan (Region III); Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon (Region IV-A); Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, and Marinduque (Region IV-B); and Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur (Region V).
Weather forecasters said that the equivalent of one month’s worth of rain fell on Metro Manila in less than a day. Reports said that about 34.1 centimeters of rain fell on Metro Manila in just six hours, close to the 39.2-centimeter average for the whole month of September.
As of 11 a.m Sunday, the tropical storm has moved on to South China Sea but it left a number of areas still underwater particularly in Marikina, Pasig, the Camanava area and parts of Manila, Quezon City and Rizal.
The sight of people stranded on rooftops desperately waiting for help is heartbreaking. Some of them are on their rooftops since the nine-hour deluge on Saturday. I even saw on TV and on Youtube how the raging flood swept away shanties and even automobiles.
If you are just like me who was spared by the typhoon or the flooding, then you are lucky. It is now time to count our blessings and be thankful to God. But it is also the time to help our fellowmen who have lost their loved ones and their homes. The government is exerting its efforts to help in the rescue and recovery of the victims but we can also do our share. Media institutions and various NGO’s are conducting telethons and fund-raising activities to help the flood and typhoon victims. Let’s do our share to help.
God bless us all!

Fun Friday - My Younger Photos
This post is quite late but as some people would say, it’s better late than never. This topic is intended for Friday but because of my problems with my internet connection, I wasn’t able to post this on time. Anyway, I just thought that this week’s topic is interesting and I don’t want to miss participating in this Group’s activity twice in a row. This week’s topic is to show pictures of our younger years.
It’s a good thing that my parents are currently living with me and they’ve brought some of my old photos from the province. Below are the youngest photos of me that I have here in the house.
This was taken when I was in First grade with my father. It was our Commencement exercise and I was the class valedictorian but for a change I pinned my ribbons on my father.
The photo below was taken when I was in Grade Four with my mother.

“Engkwentro” bagged a top award in the 66th Venice Film Festival
“Engkwentro” an independent film by young filmmaker Pepe Diokno won the top award in the Orizzonti (New Horizons), which is a section that provides a spectrum of new trends in cinema, in the 66th Venice Film Festival.
The movie which was also a finalist in the Cinemalaya 2009 was one of only 23 feature movies selected from around the world.
“Engkwentro” tells the tale of two teenage brothers on opposite sides of a gang war. Complications arise at a deadly midnight clash when one is tasked to kill the other. All these happen while the City Death Squad, a band of vigilantes supposedly backed by a Big Brother-type Mayor, is hot on their trail. The two brothers must find a way out of their squalid situation in order to stay alive.
The film was inspired by actual killings in some cities in the Philippines where almost a thousand people have been murdered by hitmen, allegedly sponsored by the state, in the last decade.
Pepe Diokno at age 21 is the youngest Filipino ever to participate in the Venice film festival.

Please pay attention...
Tragedies are happening all over the country, one after the other. If not a maritime disaster or a helicopter crash, we have these notorious vehicular accidents. How bad can this be? I can still vividly recall a news report on TV about a mother and her child walking in one of the pedestrian lanes in EDSA when they were hit by a speeding bus coming from a blind spot. The child was dead on the spot while the mother not only lost her child but also her arm due to the accident. The MMDA and other authorities are doing traffic ways and re-routing schemes but these are not even of any help.
As long as there are irresponsible drivers who don’t value their lives and those of their fellow people, accidents will continue to happen. I just hope that our authorities will focus more on enforcing laws or passing legislation to provide awareness and trainings to drivers. There are just so many reckless drivers out there who are just like dragons who are on their way to kill the next prey.
Donna let me watch a moving video on Facebook about vehicular accidents happening to even innocent people and how dreams are wasted because of these tragedies. I hope that we can all learn from this video. Please pay attention….

Fun Friday - Birthday Flower
Our Blogging for Fun group has decided to revive our Fun Friday activity due to popular demand from other members. This week’s theme is from a popular fun quiz. The topic is our birthday flower. Well, like Birthstones, every month has a birth flower and that each one has a special meaning. And like people, each birth flower is distinctive – filled with significance and stories.
August is my birth month and Gladiola is the birth flower. Its name comes from the Latin word for sword, “Gladius” which represents strength and moral integrity. Its romantic flower is capable of piercing a heart with their beauty – explaining why infatuation is another one of its meanings.
Here’s my quiz result:

History and Numbers.
Yesterday was an extraordinary day, September 9, 2009 which is 9-9-9 in numbers. It will take another 100 years for the date to appear in these numbers again. Tomorrow, the whole world will commemorate another significant number in history which is 911. The numbers signify the date, September 11, 2001, of the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York, USA.
Indeed, numbers and history are very important in today’s world. Surprisingly, many people fail to realize the importance of history in the progress of our nation. To think that we are now in the internet technology and history and other information are within our fingertips made it worse. There’s no need to delve into thick and dusty history books and journals to review what happened in the past. But still, some of us would rather maintain our historical ignorance.
I hope that there will come a time when people will be more cognizant of their history for it is in knowing the past that we can better understand the present and prepare for a better future.
So let us bring to mind some of the memorable events that happened in the month of September in history:
September 18, 1891. Philippine national hero Jose Rizal finished his novel El Filibusterismo following the first, Noli Me Tangere. Both portrayed the struggling life of the Filipinos under the Spanish rule.
September 12, 1896. A group of revolutionaries from Cavite were executed. They are now known as the "Trece Martires de Cavite" or the thirteen martyrs of Cavite
September 18, 1935. Manuel L. Quezon was elected President of the Commonwealth with Sergio Osmena as the Vice President.
September 2, 1945. Japan surrendered to the Americans right after the war in the Pacific. The Philippines later was granted its independence but with over a million Filipino casualties. More than 60,000 Americans died and 300,000 Japanese lost their lives.
September 21, 1972. Strongman Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law under the proclamation No. 1801. Opposition leaders including former Senator Benigno Aquino, other journalists and activists were detained in Fort Bonifacio under martial law.

Bata, Django won World Cup of Pool title
Efren “Bata" Reyes and Francisco “Django" Bustamante regain the PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool title before a jam-packed crowd at the SM North Edsa Mall Sunday night.
The two pool legends didn’t disappoint, rallying back from two racks down to beat Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, 11-9 to bag the competition that they first dominated in Wales last 2006.
It was not an easy win for the Filipinos, it was actually a come-from-behind victory over the German pair in a game that saw the Filipinos bounce back from a 7-9 deficit.
Bata Reyes, a former world champion who is also known as “the magician” sank the winning 9-ball to the delight of the Filipino crowd and to win the $60,000 top prize from the total cash pot of $250,000 in the prestigious tournament.
Souquet and Hohmann settled for the runner up prize of $30,000. They denied an all-Filipino title showdown when they upset the other Filipino pair of Dennis Orcollo and Ronnie Alcano in the other semifinal pairing, 9-6. Reyes and Bustamante earlier nipped China's Fu Jian-bo and Li He-wen in a classic battle of the first semifinal match, 9-8.

Choosing an Internet Service Provider.
Last weekend, one of my colleagues asked me on what I think is the best phone and internet service. She said she wants to apply for an internet service but a bit apprehensive on what company best suits her needs.
I told her that I can only speak for the internet services that I’ve tried. I informed her that the available options will depend on her location. Some internet service providers are not available in some areas. In fact, this is the reason why I switched from using BayanDSL to Smartbro. I moved to a different apartment and I was told by Bayantel that they don’t have an available facility for the DSL service on the new apartment. This is the reason why I settled for Smartbro.
I was subscribed to BayanDSL for almost a year. Their DSL service is good and I can not complain. I can only recall one instance that I called their technical support to report a downtime and it was fixed in a few hours. I don’t know now but they used to give rebates if they can not fix the problem within 24 hours. However, they have a limited coverage. So when I moved to a different house just a couple of blocks away from my previous apartment, I was surprised to learn that they no longer have a DSL facility in the area.
I have been using Smartbro for more than a year now and I can’t say that I am satisfied with their service. I became a frequent caller to their technical support hotline. Even simple things as delivering my monthly bill have become a big issue. They are quick to disconnect the service for failure to pay on time but they are too slow when it comes to fixing the problem with their internet service. One good thing that lured me to their service was they don’t require too many paperwork and documents when applying for a service. One valid ID and the Php999 advance payment and you are sure to have an internet connection in a few days time.
If you are thinking of applying for an internet service like my co-worker, make sure to compare phone and DSL Services before making a decision. If you require more information, don’t hesitate to call the internet service provider. You can also seek the assistance of friends who live in your vicinity and ask them if they are satisfied with their internet service. I’m sure that they are more than willing to recommend their internet service provider if they are satisfied with their service.
If you are in the US, you may want to check out Spectrotel, the number one leading telecommunication company offers the best VOIP and DSL services all throughout the United States.

Learning about disease symptoms.
It’s not fun to get sick. I’ve been ill twice in the last 2 months and I can tell you that it wasn’t a good experience. In one instance, I failed to report to the office for 5 consecutive days. Luckily, I was able to file for sick leave but I still missed a lot of online opportunities because of that illness.
If there’s one thing that I learned from that experience, it was to invest on how to prevent diseases. I was even reluctant before to take multivitamins and other health supplements. But now I know better. It’s better to spend on vitamins to boost my immune system than to spend more on medication when I got sick. Indeed, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Another thing that is worth doing to prevent sickness is to be informed about different diseases and how to fight them. We can learn about disease symptoms
so you have an idea on how to combat the disease. Some diseases can even be cured by medicines that can be administered at home while on some mild cases herbal medicines can help.
However, for more serious cases, it is best to consult a health specialist to avoid worsening the situation. This is also true for cases of mental or psychiatric disorders. A doctor who specializes in psychiatric medicine should be consulted. If you are interested to know about psychiatric medicine, you can visit the site of Dr Daniel Amen to learn more about his specializations.

Put on a smiling face.
Filipinos in general, love to smile. There’s no doubt about it. If you are a foreigner visiting the country, you will be amazed on how Filipinos everywhere will warmly greet visitors on every opportunity available. When you enter hotels or even restaurants, you’ll sure to get a generous amount of smile from Filipino staffs. The taxi drivers or the newspaper vendors are not to be outdone, they will have a ready smile for you should you approach them. In fact, it’s not unusual for you to see people in the streets with infectious smiles on their faces. Filipinos are known for being hospitable.
This is true even for Filipinos working abroad. They will smile and greet other people regardless of their nationality, culture or religion. We are the type of people who readily appreciates everyone. And I can say that it comes out naturally. It can be attributed to the way our parents taught us early on and our strong adherence to our tradition and religion. Even if we come from a poor family and our country is beset with so many problems, we are taught to be happy at all times. Sometimes, we even smile to hide our problems. Is there a better way to deal with problems than with a smile and a positive attitude? Will it help to solve the problem if you feel sad and gloomy? I don’t think so, we’re better off feeling happy than sad.
This sunny disposition is in fact a great asset to our countrymen. Many Filipinos working abroad have survived living away from their family by maintaining a positive attitude. Some of them are exposed to racism and not so good work environment but their resilience and optimism have been working to their advantage.
And speaking of smile, you don't need perfect teeth to have a perfect smile. Not everybody have perfect teeth, but everybody can put on a perfect smile. Beautiful teeth are nice, and it’s good if your teeth have been through one of the best New York cosmetic dentists. If you are not comfortable about your teeth which may cause your reluctance to smile, then you may look at the possibility of undergoing cosmetic dentistry procedures. But if you don’t have money to spend on these procedures, then learn to appreciate your individuality. A great smile doesn't depend on perfect teeth alone. You should practice being genuinely happy and friendly to other people. And your smile will come from within.

Is it safe to use your credit card online?
Due to my blogging and other online activities, friends and acquaintances often regarded me as knowledgeable when it comes to anything about the internet. They will often approach me with a question on how to do this and that, and on how an internet monster works. And most of the time, they will end up disappointed. Sure, I know a thing or two on how to blog and how to use the internet but I’m far from being an expert. I’m just like any other internet users who are often left in the dark when it comes to the latest in the cyberspace.
A friend once asked me if it is safe to use his credit card online and sure enough, I told him that it is quite safe. I should know as I’ve been paying my blogging bills using credit card.
Well, with all the things that you hear in the news, I can not blame why some people are apprehensive when using their credit card online. However, the fact is shopping with your credit card online is just as safe as using it in your favorite store inside a mall. You just need to be careful about where you shop and who you trust your credit card information with.
Another precaution is to make sure that you only use your credit card online on secure web sites. You can check the URL address to see if a site is secure, if it starts with https:// instead of http://, the site is secure.
As a matter of fact, even if your credit card information falls into the wrong hands, most credit card companies have safeguard and fraud protection policies which limit your liability for fraudulent charges. If you see that there charges that you didn’t authorize on your credit card statement, you can contact your credit card company and make the necessary disputes.
In the US, merchants, retailers or any other business entity that offers the convenience of credit cards as a form of payment are made to comply with the Payment Card Industry Standard or they should be PCI Compliant. Most of the merchants and online companies I know are MasterCard PCI compliant. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards are security standards created by credit card companies like Visa, Inc., MasterCard Worldwide, American Express, Discover Financial Services and JCB International to protect their cardholders from the growing number of incidents of security breaches and identity theft.
Okay, I admit that I am also apprehensive when using my credit card for my online purchases which I think is just normal. In fact, if I can help it, I will prefer to pay in cash. But whether we like it or not, paying credit card online is a convenient way to pay so we just have to take all the necessary precautions.

Okay, I admit that I am also apprehensive when using my credit card for my online purchases which I think is just normal. In fact, if I can help it, I will prefer to pay in cash. But whether we like it or not, paying credit card online is a convenient way to pay so we just have to take all the necessary precautions.

For starters, let me thank a couple of fellow bloggers and friends especially to Badong and Femme Power who sent me email messages to inform me that this blog’s comment form was not working properly since the other day. Apparently, they’ve been trying to leave comments on my posts but couldn’t. I really don’t know what happened but they said that the comment box was not scrolling down so they cannot click the button to publish their comments. I apologize for the inconvenience. I really appreciate your continued support.
Honestly, I wasn’t able to figure out the cause of the problem. A few weeks ago, I removed my previous comment form due to complaints that their comments were missing. I was also having problems managing and moderating comments on the old form, especially those comments from old posts. I simply don’t have the time to check on old posts to see if there are new comments needing a response.
While thinking of other options, I re-installed JS-Kit and I was able to leave a comment on one post. It seems that the issue has been fixed for now. I am also thinking of putting a chat box again on this blog so visitors and fellow bloggers will have an alternative way of contacting me in case the comment form fails again.
And still about comments, I also would like to apologize to visitors and fellow bloggers if I was unable to respond to your comments. I appreciate your comments but I have been too preoccupied with some other things lately that I no longer have time to visit other blogs or respond to comments. I promise to visit your blogs and respond to your comments once everything goes back to normal.
Again, thank you for your continued support!

A Touching Story From My Email Archives.
I was going over my email archives recently, looking for an email that I know was sent to me a couple of months ago, when I realized how amazing my email inbox has become. It has become an online journal. I felt nostalgia just browsing at email messages that was sent by friends and colleagues a long time ago (well, not that long). I have not seen some of these friends for years. Really, reading old emails brings back memories. I still have email messages that were sent by my colleagues when I was still on another company and I still have an email from the Human Resources of that company acknowledging my resignation. I can also see on my Sent items, the messages that I wrote to friends and family members.
I found a couple of good stuffs as well. You know, the usual funny and inspiring messages that we often received from various sources. Some of these I found entertaining and poignant that I even forwarded the messages to friends or were shared on my blogs. Some, I can not even recall reading and were easily buried to oblivion.
I came across some messages that are worth sharing like this old item:
While a man was polishing his new car one weekend, his five-year-old son picked up a stone and scratched some lines on the side of the vehicle.
In anger, the man grabbed the child’s hand and hit it many times, not realizing he was using a wrench. At the hospital, the child lost all the fingers of his right hand due to multiple fractures.
When the child saw his father, with painful eyes he asked, “Dad when will my fingers grow back?” Hurt and speechless; the man went back to his car and kicked it several times.
Sitting dejected beside his car, he saw up close what his son had scrawled: “LOVE YOU DAD.”

Fil-Am opera-pop singer to perform in Carnegie Hall, NY.
Stephanie Reese, a Filipino-American singer-actress is set to perform at the Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan in New York City on November 7. She will be the second Filipina to sing in the celebrated concert hall after Lea Salonga made it big in Broadway.
Based on reports, Reese is donating the proceeds on this appearance to the Gawad Kalinga charities for the homeless. Gawad Kalinga is the Philippine equivalent of Habitat for Humanity. She said she wants to build a village for 30 poor Filipino families.
Among Reese’s accomplishments were her portrayal of Kim in the German production of “Miss Saigon;” Esmeralda in the Disney World Premier of the “Hunchback of Notre Dame;” and Princess Tuptim in “The King and I” at the Palladium Theater in London’s West End.
She also wrote, directed and starred in a one-woman show, “The Journey,” performed at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco. “The Journey,” and other shows after that, launched Reese’s solo career. She is known for her original music, which is a unique fusion of opera and pop.
Reese made her Hollywood debut last year when she shared the stage with Patti Labelle and Natalie Cole during the 10th anniversary of the Crustacean Restaurant of Beverly Hills.
