Filipino Pride, Donaire wins World Boxing Title

Nonito Donaire Jr. also known as “The Filipino Flash” is the Philippines newest world boxing champion after his triumph over Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion via unanimous decision in the main event at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Donaire, the 26-year California-based fighter, took home the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight crown. It is his third title in his second weight division. He previously held the International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization flyweight belts but had to forfeit both 112-lb crowns after his decision to jump up the super flyweight class.

Wearing a yellow robe with red trimmings in memory of the late President Cory Aquino (with Aquino’s name at the back of his robe and trunks), Donaire entered the ring in a customized Philippine-themed boxing boots. And with the Filipino song “Sarung Banggi” at his back ground to the delight and cheers of his mostly Filipino fans.

Early in the fight, Donaire managed to open a cut on the Panamanian’s left eye lid in the second round but failed to exploit on that advantage. Concepcion also retaliated with several power punches and jabs at the Filipino’s face and body capitalizing on his almost five-lb weight advantage. But Donaire made his move in the latter part of the fight connecting solid punches. Both fighters showed toughness with no one being knocked down.

The three judges are unanimous with their decision, giving the fight to Donaire. Judge Max De Luca scored it at 117-111, Duane Ford saw it at 115-113 while Jerry Roth gave a 116-112 edge all for Donaire.

Celebrating a special day at the Office.

Today is Friday, the last day of the week, which also happens to be a payday since the 15th falls on a Saturday. No matter how hard I tried to make this day as ordinary as possible, I cannot deny the fact that today is an extraordinary day. I can only blame Facebook and Friendster on why our friends and colleagues know what is happening in our lives. Now, all my friends know that today is my birthday.

I don’t usually go to work during my birthdays. I don’t want to give my colleagues a chance to make fun of me and make me the center of attention so I would rather file for a vacation leave even if I will just spend the day at home, in retrospect. I simply can not stand my co-workers pestering me for a blow-out or a pizza treat. I may give in that easily hehehe. Not today, though. I decided to go to work for a change. And I managed to get through it unscathed. In fact, it was a great day!

I never expected it. My colleagues never gave a sign that they were planning for something. And just when I thought that this was just another humdrum day, it ended with a pleasant surprise.

I am not posting this to fish for compliments; I just want to thank my team mates for their efforts to make this day a memorable one for me. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your friendship, love and respect. You guys are the best!

Filipina elected as vice president of UN Human rights body

A Filipina was unanimously voted as Vice-President of the United Nations Human Rights Council's advisory committee. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Presidential Envoy for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Dr. Purificacion Valera-Quisumbing was elected during its third session at the United Nations office in Geneva last August 6.

The Human Rights Council Advisory Committee, composed of 17 independent human rights experts, is the think-tank body of the Human Rights Council, of which the Philippines is a founding member.

One of the most important tasks given to the Advisory Committee is the elaboration of a draft United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education.

Dr. Quisumbing’s election as Vice-President of the HRC Advisory Committee adds to her long list of accomplishments in the human rights field, among others, as a Chairperson of the Philippine Commission on Human Rights, former President of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and Assistant Secretary for Human Rights under the administration of the late President Corazon C. Aquino.

TIME Magazine honors the late President Cory Aquino.

TIME Magazine pays tribute to the late and former Philippine President Corazon Aquino one last time on the cover of their latest issue, dated August 17, 2009.

The death of the “plain housewife” who became a universal symbol of democracy made headlines across the globe.

The international news magazine honors the former Philippine President who was praised as “The Woman Who Changed Asia, “The Saint of Democracy,” and “A Miracle Worker in a Plain Yellow Dress.”

The publication also highlighted that the former President was on the 1986 cover story, where she was proclaimed as that year’s Woman of the Year. She was the second woman to hold that distinction.

According to the Time article: “She was a good woman whose goodness alone, at the very end, was what proved enough, if only by an iota, to save her country.”

It was not only the TIME Magazine who gave honor to President Cory, other global publications honored Tita Cory for being an icon of democracy from the the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Washington Times, Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times.

“Whenever the country appeared to be in a crisis, Cory Aquino rose above the bureaucratic procrastination that had always bogged it down, reminding her people that they once astonished the world with their bravery — and that they could do it again. But Filipinos must now take stock. Whom will they march with now that their saint has gone to meet her God?” the Time article said which is also a challenge to all Filipinos to value the legacy of the country’s icon of democracy.
