Today is National Heroes Day 2009

Today is declared as a legal non-working holiday for the entire Philippines in observance of the National Heroes Day, as per Proclamation No. 1699. The day (August 30) originally commemorates the “Cry of Pugad Lawin” by Filipino revolutionaries or the Katipunan led by its leader Andres Bonifacio.

It is the best time to remember our heroes and the myriad faceless other men and women who have sacrificed their lives and given up so much for our country. These people have done noble acts and selfless deeds in the service of their fellow Filipinos to make our motherland a better place to live in.

As a people, it is time to renew our vow to uphold our traditions and aspirations and celebrate the achievements, the deeds of valor and nationalism of our nation’s heroes and martyrs.

May the hearts of every Filipino be filled with patriotic fervor, and the firm determination to serve our country not only in times of war but also in peace, and to make the Philippines a truly progressive and strong nation.

Happy National Heroes Day to all!

Forbe's Richest Man in the Philippines

If we were to base the Philippine’s economy on the wealth of the country’s richest people then things are looking brighter in the Philippines. This was indicated in the Forbes report of the Philippine’s 40 richest man published last August 25.

This year, 25 tycoons are richer compared to the previous list available last October 2008, including nine of the top 10. The biggest gainer is mall mogul Henry Sy, who is once again the Philippine’s richest person. His net worth increased $700 million to $3.8 billion, as shares of his main holding company, SM Investments, appreciated by 28% since October.

The Sy family has the widest network of retail outlets nationwide. Four of the family’s over 100 malls in the Philippines and China are included in the world’s biggest malls.

In the meantime, former Philippine’s richest Lucio Tan (#2) and Ayala conglomerate’s chairman emeritus Jaime Zobel de Ayala (#3) took the next slots.

Tan has interests in tobacco, beer, and banking. He is also in highly regulated industries, including aviation. Philippine Airlines, where he has a controlling stake, has been having financial troubles as it faces tougher competition.

On the other hand, Zobel de Ayala, who is of Spanish descent, has left the day to day management of his family’s interests in property, retail, banking, telecommunications, and water to his children. He is now an art advocate and is into photography.

Another notable member of the top 10 is Sen. Manuel Villar (#9) who is a May 2010 presidential aspirant. He has interests in real estate, which includes listed home developer Vista Land and Lifescapes. Forbes calculate his current wealth at $530 million or about P25 billion.

Cory Aquino stamps.

The photo above is on the front-page of a national broadsheet. Based on the report, the post office will soon issue a limited number of the late President Corazon Aquino stamps like the photo shown above on the 40th day of Aquino’s death, on Sept. 8. The stamp was designed by Marco Ruben Trinos Malto II, a UP fine arts graduate, and photographed by Menchit Ongpin.

Well, this is a fitting tribute to the icon of democracy. I'll be looking forward to seeing these stamps. And I'm sure that stamp collectors are waiting for these as well.

Filipina Miss Universe Beauties.

It’s the Miss Universe season once again. Like many people around the world, Filipinos stay tuned to watch the Miss Universe Pageant last Monday. Although the Filipina beauty Pamela Bianca Manalo failed to enter the Top 15 (surprisingly, no Asian candidate was on the list) the show was a celebration of beauty after all and it was a fun show to watch.

While browsing the internet, I came across a couple of information about the Philippine’s participation in the most celebrated beauty pageant.

The Philippines already won 2 Miss Universe title: Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margarita Moran in 1973.

The Philippines has won the most Miss Photogenic award having won seven times (including a back-to-back and a three-peat).

Gloria Díaz, the first Filipina to win the Miss Universe title was only eighteen when she became Miss Universe of 1969 after outsmarting other candidates on the question on how to welcome the first men that had just landed on the moon as soon as they were back on the planet.

Margarita Moran was a full-time university student and part-time model won the Miss Universe crown in 1973 in Athens, Greece. She is a granddaughter of former Philippine President Manuel Roxas. She said that she entered the contest because of the incessant urgings of friends and family.

Margarita Moran (Philippines, 1973) is one of the four Miss Universe winners who were also awarded Miss Photogenic.
