Campaign Period

It’s almost 70 days before the 2010 Philippine Presidential elections. The campaign period started a couple of weeks ago although candidates have been bombarding the public with their campaign or “infomercials” on TV and radio since last year.

I initially thought that once the official campaign period has started, they will be able to enforce the Fair Elections Act and level the playing field, so to speak, since the Commission on Elections or COMELEC can now monitor the number of times a candidate`s advertisements were shown or aired on TV. Candidates who have billions of money to spend will need to limit their spending spree. But then again, this is easier said than done. With only a few months away from election, the election body has yet to show muscle in implementing the law. Streamers of national candidates are still scattered everywhere, even on public transport especially on buses. There were candidates who suddenly became generous and started giving so many things including scholarships to people during campaign sorties which is not only unfair but a clear violation of election laws.

Ensuring the success of this proceeding is imperative if the country wants to attain national solidarity and progress. A clean election can easily restore investor confidence for the country. But first, the people in charge should take their responsibilities seriously.

Ultimately, the voice of the people should prevail. I earnestly hope that the winner will get a clean mandate from the people. Every Filipino is dreaming for a clean and honest election. Let’s all work on making that dream a reality.

"Worthy of what this country deserves."
we'll never get that do we? we have a sick culture. a culture of impunity, permissiveness bordering on twisted martyrdom, ignorance, di-ako-makiki-alam attitude feigning as apathy, and absence of national identity.
you and i know, readers of this blog, that we belong to the well-to-do level of society, hence, access to these very words we're reading.
you and i know, that those ads strewn along sidewalks, blaring banners on overpasses, recurring christmas-like jingles on the radio, and messianic-angelic apparitions on TV are idiotic, opportunist, and belittling to the voting public. moreso, it treats us like we're simple-minded and dumb by making us think that they're messiahs - they can emancipate us from poverty - when they become the president vice president or senator!
so do you accept, personally, in your heart, that Villar can "stop my hirap", Erap is "para sa mahirap", Eddie is doing this for "Dios at bayan", and whatever those other presidentiables promise?
is it me or WE REALLY are idiots?

Oh yes, here we go again. Nagiging karnabal na naman ang RP dahil sa eleksyon. Just curious, Leomar. Sinong iboboto mo for prexy? I'm rooting for Gibo [hindi ako nangangampanya para sa kanya, lol].

Thanks, Betchai. For Filipinos living overseas, we can only expect prayers that the next election will be clean and honest for a change. But for Filipinos who are in the country, we should do our share in assuring that the voice of the people will prevail. I urge everyone to be vigilant....

Thanks for sharing your sentiments. I can only agree to some extent but I choose to be hopeful that someday, somehow, this country will recover...

Di pa ako nakakapag-decide kung sino ang iboboto ko, ang napagdesisyunan ko na ay kung sino ang mga hindi ko iboboto. 3 na lang siguro ang nasa shortlist ko hehehe.
