Cory Aquino dies at 76

Former President of the Philippines Corazon Aquino died at 3:18 this morning (Manila time) due to Cardio-Respiratory Arrest. She was 76.

The country’s 11th President who ended the 20-year regime of a dictator was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer last year and she was confined to a Manila hospital for more than a month. It was said that the cancer had spread to other organs and she was too weak to continue her chemotherapy.

The bespectacled mother with her trademark yellow dress, rose in power after the assassination of her husband, former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. in 1983 and her installation as a president after a peaceful revolt in Feb. 25, 1986. These non-violent protests inspired many across the globe.

Supporters have been holding daily prayers for Tita Cory, as she is fondly called, in churches in Manila and throughout the country for the past month. Requiem Masses were scheduled for later Saturday, and yellow ribbons were tied on trees around her neighborhood in Quezon City.

It was her son, Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III who announced that the well-loved former President died at 3:18 a.m. Saturday.

Let us pray for the eternal repose of the soul of our former President.

Dear leomar,
How could you forget revolutionary protest by Gandhiji from India in South Africa and India which itself lead the foundation of non-violent protest.

My condolence message for the great departed soul who really deserved the patronage,

I have only heard stories of this woman, who I find to be quite amazing. May she rest in peace.
